Shock Dampers decrease reverse load by 99% in a 400-ton Niagara press

INDUSTRY

Manufacturing

CHALLENGE

Excessive reverse loads during press operation can cause significant damage to both the press and tooling, leading to costly downtime and maintenance.

RESULTS

Installing Hylatechnik Shock Dampers significantly reduced reverse loads, allowing the press to operate within safe limits. The dampers also lowered vibration and noise, improving overall performance and extending equipment life without requiring major design changes.

Press Automation

Press Automation is a stamping and automation equipment distributor. They also serve as a third party resource to manufacturers, providing hands-on support and real-world testing to evaluate press and press accessory performance in production environments. They validate equipment functionality, identify potential improvements, ensure efficient, reliable and safe press operations.

FYI: 100 tons – 1.2 tons = 98.8/100 = 99% reduction

Have you ever been in a metal stamping facility and heard something that sounds like a cannon? Bang, bang, bang! when the press strokes. This could be an indicator of reverse tonnage that is causing destructive force on the components of your press and tooling. Reverse tonnage will eventually cause significant damage resulting in costly repairs and downtime.

Is my press safe from reverse tonnage?

By industry standards, a reverse tonnage load should not exceed 10% of the maximum forward capacity. A 600-ton press, for example, would have a maximum allowable reverse load of 60 tons. Anything over this could severely put the press at risk.

Hylatechnik developed this technology over 45 years ago, hydraulic Shock Dampers have been used to protect the press and tooling from snap-through loads. This protective equipment reduces or eliminates reverse loads, in some cases by 83%-100%, as well as lower floor vibration and noise levels.

25% Reverse load tonnage reduced to 0.01% on a 400-ton press

As part of the demonstration, Press Automation installed Hylatechnik Shock Dampers onto a 400-ton Niagara press. Before the Dampers were added, the press was seeing a reverse load of 100 tons or 25%tonnage, significantly exceeding the recommended 10% of the rated forward load in a reverse load situation. By placing the Hylatechnik Dampers on the press, the reverse load was reduced to 0.01% tonnage or 1.2 tons. There was also a substantial reduction in the noise around the press with the Dampers in place. Fyi: 100 tons ÷ 400 ton press = 25%.

The charts below show the recordings of the working tonnage and reverse load of the system without the impact dampers (A) and with the impact dampers (B).

Test Notes: By optimizing the orifice in the shock dampers, it will decrease the forward tonnage while slightly increasing the reverse tonnage.
