What are valve actuators?

Valve actuators mount on valves and move valves to a desired position by utilizing liquid, electric or some other power source.

How are valve actuators used?

Although the most common and important use of a valve actuator is to open and close valves, current actuator designs go far beyond the basic open and close function. The valve actuator can be packaged together with position sensing equipment, torque sensing, motor protection, logic control and digital communication capacity all in a compact, protected enclosure.

Valve Actuator Benefits

  • 12 drive size options
  • Torque up to 250,000 Nm at 210 bar
  • Slim, compact body with small dimensions
  • Smallest footprint to torque ratio in the Eckart product line
  • Virtually maintenance free, no lubrication required
  • High repeatability with very simple control of the flow rates
  • Extremely trip possible (e.g. 90° in 0.2 sec.)
  • Robust and durable in extreme applications, including vibration and environments

Valve actuators are used across a wide range of industries for their quarter-turn actuation, including marine & offshore, mining, construction, and industrial.

Gate Actuation

Hydraulic valve actuators were originally designed for automating valves in demanding industrial applications. Today, this is still one of their most common use cases. This includes the actuation of heavy gates. Their quarter-turn design makes them especially suited for this movement, as well as their footprint to torque ratio. This allows them to fit into smaller space-constrained applications while still being able to open and close large metal gates and doors on industrial machinery.

The HyRAV SG is our standard model, while the HyRAV Flex is our customizable model.

If your application requirements fit within the specifications of the HyRAV SG, this valve actuator will be the right solution for you. This often includes standard industrial applications. If your application has specific requirements outside of these confines, however, the Flex model offers maximum performance and flexibility. Some customization options include high torque reserves, flexible interfaces, control boxes, valve blocks, and application-specific engineering for installation conditions, environments, or valve requirements.

The right choice between double-acting or single-acting spring return comes down to two application factors: the required fail-safe function and the switching frequency.

A double-acting actuator is recommended when your application includes high switching frequencies, precise positioning, or high torque in both directions, as hydraulic pressure is used both when the valve opens and closes, hence the term double-acting. This means the force is consistent, quick, and rigid throughout the entire range of motion. These are typically seen in industrial automation, control valves, and whenever the valve must maintain its position in the event of a pressure loss.

A single-acting actuator with spring return is recommended whenever safety is a concern. When a defined safety position (either fail-safe closed or fail-safe open) is required in the event of a failure, this model is the better option. The spring return allows the actuator to revert to its defined position without an external energy source. These are typically seen as emergency shut-off valves and in chemical processing plants and water treatment facilities.

The maximum operating pressure of the HyRAV valve actuator is 210 bar (3,045 psi). It is capable of torque up to 250,000 Nm (2,210,000 in-lbs) at this operating pressure.

Yes. The HyRAV valve actuators are suited for a wide variety of applications with extreme conditions. This includes explosive environments, submersible applications, temperatures from -25°C to +70°C (-13ºF to 158ºF), saltwater conditions, heavy vibrations, and more.

The HyRAV carries the following:

  • IP68 protection rating
  • ATEX certification for use in potentially explosive atmospheres
  • SIL2/3 certification for functional safety applications

The HyRAV valve actuator uses the EN ISO 5211 standard flange, so that the actuator can be used in standard configurations or in place of most manufacturers’ actuators without custom adapter plates.

The HyRAV double-acting cylinders are rated for over 100,000 operations.

The concentric design transmits torque coaxially to the valve stem, which means no radial loads. This reduces mechanical stress on the valve, helps minimize maintenance requirements, and supports a long service life.
