Rotary Actuators – HyRAV Rotary Actuator

The HyRAV model is Eckart’s hydraulic quarter-turn valve actuator, built for automating industrial valves in demanding environments. The series covers 12 drive sizes with torque up to 250,000 Nm at 210 bar. Rotation is offered in 0–90°, 120°, or 180°+, with positioning accuracy under 0.5° of full scale. Both double-acting and spring-return (fail-safe) versions are available, with operating times from 0.5 to 200 seconds and fail-safe response as fast as 0.1 seconds.

The valve actuator functions according to the principle of helical gears. The compact and concentric design of the valve has proven to be excellent in practice and provides the customer with space savings as well as reliability. Moreover, the HyRAV series can be applied in the most severe conditions, i.e. from high vibrations to severe environmental locations, and further, provides a powerful, safe  solution for automation of valves. Additionally, the series is easily adapted to all types of valves, what is a result of the generous design of the hollow shaft and adaptable flange types.

E1 Hydraulic Rotary Actuator FAQs

The E1 is more suited to lower pressure, lightweight applications than the SM4.

The E1 offers higher torque at the same pressure ratings than the SM4, but has a lower maximum pressure rating. Both models are fully customizable, but the SM4 has a maximum pressure rating of 250 bar (3,625 psi), while the E1 has a maximum pressure rating of 100 bar (1,450 psi). The actuator is still capable of precise, backlash-controlled rotation, but has a lower load capacity and a smaller footprint, suitable for light to medium duty systems. 

The E1 has a maximum pressure rating of 100 bar (1,450 bar) with standard and custom angle options, meaning virtually any degree of rotation is possible.

E1 actuators offer higher torque for the same pressure ratings when compared to the SM4, but have a lower maximum pressure of 100 bar (1,450 bar). It requires a minimum operating pressure of 5 to 10 bar (72.5 to 145 psi). All standard rotation options are available (including 90º, 180º, 270º, and 360º), but intermediate angles and beyond are available upon request. 

Yes, the E1 offers several standard options and can be adapted for additional features on request. 

Many E1 customization options are available, including different shaft styles, mounting patterns, and options such as cams, locating pins, and inductive control switches for end-position signaling and simple angle monitoring. The E1 offers a torque range of 74 to 2,450 Nm (650 to 21,680 in-lb) depending on size of the piston.

This series offers higher torque at lower pressure ratings compared to the SM4. This means that when both the SM4 and the E1 are running at 100 bar (1,450 psi), the E1 is capable of higher maximum torque of a relative size.

Hydraulic Rotary Actuators – E1

The E1 is Eckart’s entry-level hydraulic rotary actuator, designed for low-pressure systems and the successor to the popular SM1 series. It delivers 654 to 21,684 in-lb of torque across six piston sizes at operating pressures up to 100 bar. It functions with the “helical gear principle” and offers standard rotation in 90°, 180°, 270°, or 360° with intermediate angles or rotations beyond 360° available on request.

While the E1 has a lower maximum pressure rating than the flagship SM4, it produces higher torque at the same pressure. Shaft style, mounting pattern, end cushioning, and position feedback are all configurable.

Helical Spline Hydraulic Rotary Actuators:

Our rotary actuators are the helical spline design. This means, a piston and a helix, or sliding spline, work together to convert the linear motion of the piston into rotational motion. Composed of two moving parts and some form of housing, the sliding helical splined gear concept within the actuator is used in many applications where a rotary movement is required. Helical Spline Actuators function when the piston is axially displaced using hydraulic pressure causing simultaneous rotation of the piston. Standard amounts of rotation are 90°, 180°, and 360°; but are available generally up to 720° or more. Additional rotation is created by making the spline gears longer while maintaining the same diameter. The primary benefit to this type of product compared to alternative designs such as linkages using hydraulic cylinders (linear actuators) is its compact design.

E3 Hydraulic Rotary Actuator FAQs

The E3 runs up to 210 bar and covers a wide high torque range.

E3 rotary actuators are rated for 210 bar (3,045 psi) maximum operating pressure and cover a torque range from 400 Nm up to 3,600 Nm (3,540 in-lbs to 31,862 in-lbs) depending on the size of the actuator. Find the exact specifications on our E3 information sheet.

E3 offers 180º and 360º options with a through-hole shaft.

Standard rotation options of the E3 rotary actuator are 180º and 360º. The E3 also has a through-hole shaft as standard so hoses, cables, or safety pins/bolts can pass through. This is especially important for work platforms and similar applications that mount directly onto the actuator. 

E3 rotary actuators feature a flange shaft for easy mounting, offer high torque and high bearing capacity, and utilize a very compact package. 

The E3 is the most compact actuator in our Eckart line. It features the same helical spline design and high torque, but also offers flange shaft, cantilever style mounting, making it well suited for mobile and off-highway machinery.

The E3 emphasizes low backlash, stable support, and optional counterbalance valves. 

Nearly backlash-free spline threads and the bearing design provide a steady working platform. Combined with a counterbalance valve option that can be mounted directly to the ports for load-holding, clamping, and overpressure protection, this makes the E3 suitable where platform stability and operator safety are critical.

Hydraulic Rotary Actuators – E3

The E3 is Eckart’s compact hydraulic rotary actuator for mobile and off-highway applications. It provides 3,540 to 31,862 in-lb of torque across five piston sizes at operating pressures up to 210 bar, with standard rotation in 180° or 360°. Every E3 comes with a flange shaft and through-hole as standard, allowing hoses, cables, or safety pins to pass through the actuator.

While the E3 is dimensionally interchangeable with competing actuators, three design choices set it apart: virtually backlash-free spline threads, zero play in the four-point roller bearing, and the elimination of compact seals that take stress on both sides. The result is a steady, wobble-free working platform even under lateral load.

SM4 Hydraulic Rotary Actuator FAQs

The SM4 is rated up to 250 bar (3,625 psi), but can operate efficiently from low pressures.

SM4 rotary actuators are designed for a maximum operating pressure of 250 bar, but their low friction seals allow the rotary actuator to operate from as low as 10 bar (145 psi).

Standard angles include 90º, 180º, 270º, and 360º, with low, configurable backlash.

The SM4 rotary actuator can handle all standard rotations, with any intermediate angle (including >360º) available by limiting or increasing stroke length. Backlash is typically around 20 angular minutes. Custom models are available with backlash down to about 5 angular minutes for higher position accuracy.

The SM4 is designed to handle high radial and axial loads due to its four-point bearing. 

The four-point bearing is designed to withstand significant radial and axial loads, making it suitable for applications where the actuator shaft carries the load directly (such as boom pivots or workplatforms). Low axial hydraulic load on the drive shaft (due to a small pressure differential) further protects the bearing and extends service life. 

Use standard HLP mineral oil, typically -25ºC to +70ºC (-13ºF to 158ºF), with good filtration.

  • Hydraulic fluids: SM4 actuators are designed for mineral oil hydraulic fluids of group HLP as per DIN 51524 part 2 (VDMA 24318) with viscosity roughly 16 to 68 cSt in the 40ºC to 60ºC (104ºF to 140ºF) range.
  • Operating temperature: The typical operating temperature is between -25ºC to +70ºC (-13ºF to 158ºF) given that the above fluid specifications are met.
  • Filtration Levels: The system should maintain cleanliness better than ISO 4406 class 19/15, typically via ≤25 µm pressure/return filtration. 

Hydraulic Rotary Actuators – SM4

The SM4 is Eckart’s flagship hydraulic rotary actuator line, and one of the most configurable units in its category.

Torque ranges from 1,593 to 752,316 in-lb across thirteen piston sizes, with operating pressure up to 250 bar or higher on request. Standard rotation is offered in 90°, 180°, 270°, or 360° as standard with intermediate angles and rotations beyond 720° built to order.

Because of its torque, angle of rotation, pressure range, positioning accuracy, stability of position, type of attachment, and its dimensions, the Eckart SM4 rotary actuator can be used in a wide range of applications. Not only is the SM4 a compact and robust unit, but it is also wear-resistant and efficient. The SM4 can be configured with an industry-leading fine and controllable end cushioning curve. Additionally, the SM4 unit can be driven via “black and white” or with proportional, control, and servo valves. For the purpose of subsequent driving, the piston end-positions at the linear cylinder and at the rotary actuator can be scanned via electronic end-position acknowledgement mechanisms. Ultimately, with the SM4, you have a high-performing product that is both robust and compact, allowing for optimal adaptation depending on your specific requirements. Helical Spline Hydraulic Rotary Actuators:

Like all Eckart hydraulic rotary actuators, the SM4 is designed with helical spline technology. The actuator operates with a piston and a helical or sliding spline mechanism, which work in tandem to transform the piston’s linear motion into rotational movement.

Standard Rotations:

Also available are special models with rotations in excess of 360°. Additional rotation is created by making the spline gears longer while maintaining the same diameter. Hydraulic Rotary Actuators – HSE4 Rotary-Linear Actuator

The Eckart HSE4 rotary-linear actuator is a combination of a rotary actuator and a dual-action linear cylinder, allowing for full flexibility in a minimal amount of space. The HSE4 offers torque up to 266,000 in-lb (30,000 Nm), lifting power up to 850,000 N, and operating pressure up to 1,450 psi (100 bar). Consequently, both a rotary movement and a linear movement can be executed even when operated in an extremely small area. Additionally, since the rotary actuator and the linear cylinder are hydraulically-driven separately, any movement sequences can be selected: for example, rotating to the left and right, extending linearly, and retracting.

Furthermore, if both components are driven evenly, then both types of movement will be executed synchronously. The directional valve controls the movement of rod rotation and linear stroking. Because of its torque, angle of rotation, pressure range, positioning accuracy, stability of position, type of attachment, and its dimensions, the Eckart HSE4 rotary actuator can be used in a wide range of applications.

Common applications for the HSE4 include lifting and turning. Not only is the HSE4 a compact and robust unit, but it is also wear-resistant, efficient, and cushioning. Additionally, the HSE4 unit can be driven via “black and white” or with proportional, control, and servo valves. For the purpose of subsequent driving, the piston end-positions at the linear cylinder and at the rotary actuator can be scanned via electronic end-position acknowledgement mechanisms. Ultimately, with the HSE4, you have a high-performing product that is both robust and compact, allowing for optimal adaptation depending on your specific requirements.

After selecting a base Eckart model, a wide variety of aspects can be customized such as bearings, mountings, shaft, or valve blocks.

Pressure, torque/moment, rotation, loads, environment, and any special considerations.

Provide us with operating pressure, required torque and moment, rotation angle, expected side and axial loads, fluid type, temperature range, mounting style, and any special considerations. For example, if the actuator will be subjected to a lot of saltwater or contaminants.

Additional information that may be helpful if it is applicable would be seal compatibility for non-mineral oil based hydraulic fluids, custom mounting requirements, or necessity for position sensors.

Customizations Built to Your Requirements

1. Drive shaft and bottom configurations

Select from a diverse range of drive shaft options including smooth, rectangular, geared, and more. Additionally, choose from a large selection of bottom configurations.

2. Mounting options

Mounting options include foot or flange with fixing grooves, flattened surfaces, or configurations per DIN ISO 5211.

3. Operating pressure above 250 bar (3,625 psi)

For high force applications, you can configure an actuator rated for operating pressures above 250 bar (3,625 psi).

4. Change of rotation direction

While anti-clockwise rotation is standard, actuators can be specially configured clockwise.

5. Angle adjustment over the entire rotary range

If you need greater extension past the standard ±5º of adjustment, you can equip the actuator with a long-range end stop.

6. Custom and intermediate angles

Standard rotations include 90º, 180º, 270º, and 360º. Intermediate angles can be achieved by adding a spacer within the model’s housing. A 100º actuator, for example, would use a 180º housing. Angles above 360º can also be achieved by making the helical gears longer.

Custom actuator bodies are available for large quantity orders.

7. Position monitoring and feedback

Any position encoders, proximity switch, and sensors for better control, safety, and diagnostics, perfect for automation and testing applications where exact positioning is essential.

8. Additional bearing support

If the actuator is used for supporting loads, additional radial bearing can be added.

9. Direct connection of valves

Valves can be directly mounted to the top of the actuator to provide better control.

10. Modify end cushioning

The cushioning curve is highly customizable to the application and can be fine-tuned by utilizing up to 10 individual orifices plus throttling valves. (Not available for E3, optional other models).

11. Add second drive pivot

A second drive pivot can be added to the base of the actuator. This is useful in tipping applications where the load needs dual support.

12. Additional customizations

Further customizations can include but are not limited to special paints, colors, lake and saltwater resistance, as well as materials options, servo valve mounting plates, port configurations, and various certifications such as ATEX, DNV, ABS, etc.

Helical Spline Hydraulic Rotary Actuators:

Our rotary actuators are the helical spline design. This means, a piston and a helix, or sliding spline, work together to convert the linear motion of the piston into rotational motion. Composed of two moving parts and some form of housing, the sliding helical splined gear concept within the actuator is used in many applications where a rotary movement is required.
